On February 20th, 2025, we mark World Social Justice Day—a time to reflect on the systemic inequalities that continue to shape our world and to take meaningful action toward justice and dignity for all.
In 2024, we saw growing injustices worldwide—conflicts displacing millions, climate events devastating entire communities, power shifts that stripped people of their basic rights. World Social Justice Day is a day consider how our own actions can be influential in ensuring self-determination, fairness, and equity become part of decision making across all sectors of our society.
The Urgent Call for Social Justice and Corporate Social Responsibility
At its core, social justice is about who has power and who is denied it. It is about ensuring that people—regardless of their background, gender, race, or economic status—can shape their own futures rather than being at the mercy of political and economic forces beyond their control.
Businesses play a crucial role in shaping social justice outcomes. True Corporate Social Responsibility goes beyond token gestures—it means fair wages, ethical supply chains, and investment in communities, ensuring that economic success does not come at the cost of exploitation or environmental harm. If social justice were truly embedded in corporate strategies, we would see more sustainable employment, equitable opportunities, and corporate accountability for human rights.
What Are the Key Social Justice Challenges in 2025?
Climate Injustice – Rising sea levels and extreme weather continue to threaten the most vulnerable communities, especially in the Pacific Islands and low-lying coastal regions. The push for climate adaptation must prioritize those most affected.
Human Rights & Displacement – In 2024, more people were forcibly displaced than ever before. Wars, political repression, and economic instability have made entire populations stateless and silenced those who dare to advocate for justice.
Poverty – While the world produces enough resources for all, millions remain in extreme poverty due to systemic barriers to wealth distribution and employment.
What Can We Do in 2025?
- Promote Inclusion in Everyday Life – Social justice isn’t just about policy, it’s about how we treat each other. Listening to marginalised voices, challenging discrimination, and fostering inclusive spaces are key to building a fairer world.
- Engage in Ethical Consumerism – Holding businesses accountable for their role in social justice means choosing to support companies that uphold fair wages, sustainable practices, and ethical sourcing.
- Advocate for “Just” Policy – Laws and policies shape our societies. In 2025, we must push for policies that uphold human rights, climate justice, and fair economic systems.
2025: A Year for Action
As we move forward in 2025, we must ensure that social justice is not just an ideal, but a priority. The Edmund Rice Centre (a global centre for social justice and advocacy leadership) believes enduring social justice depends on the intersection of corporate, faith, government and community. We sit in this nexus, building awareness, and capacity of each group, and providing a bridge to deeper dialogue around the pressing issues of today - climate justice, human dignity, and self-determination.
Join us in conversation and awareness raising—because a just world is not something we wait for; it is something we foster and create.
