The International Day of Persons with Disabilities (IDPD), observed annually on December 3, is a UN-designated day dedicated to promoting the rights and well-being of individuals with disabilities. The day highlights the importance of inclusion and equity, emphasizing that persons with disabilities should have equal opportunities to participate in all aspects of life, including political, social, economic, and cultural spheres.
This observance raises awareness of the barriers that people with disabilities continue to face and advocates for measures to remove those barriers, whether physical, social, or systemic. The goal is to create an inclusive society where individuals with disabilities are empowered to fully participate in all areas of life without discrimination.
In September of this year, Corinne, Rose & Cate (DLA Piper) had the opportunity to visit the Fusi Alofa Association. This organisation is the only service providing advocacy support and program delivery to person’s living with a disability in Tuvalu. It was a heart-warming and inspirational visit where members were able to share about the programs that they participate in as well as the resources and support that is required for person’s living with a disability particularly during climate emergencies. ERC also hosted Fusi Alofa’s Climate Change Project Officer – Marion Mono, who recently completed the 6-weeks Pacific Islands Fellowship Program here in Sydney.
