His Excellency Anote Tong, former President of the Republic of Kiribati (2003–2016) and current Chair of the Pacific Elders’ Voice, is a globally recognised advocate for climate change action. During his presidency, he brought international attention to the existential threat of rising sea levels to his people and other low-lying island nations. Tong continues to fight for sustainable development worldwide, earning numerous accolades for his environmental leadership, including the SunHak Peace Prize and two nominations for the Nobel Peace Prize.
