Responding to misstatements about Climate change

Key Points:

  • 97 per cent of climate scientists agree that human activity is damaging our climate. Most of us aren’t medical doctors so when we get sick, we see a doctor and follow their advice. The same logic applies when it comes to climate change. Most of us aren’t scientists but we accept the advice of scientists on a whole range of issues. So when 97 per cent of climate scientists say human action is causing global temperatures to rise and the climate to change we should listen and take action.
  • Damage is being done to our climate because of decisions made by politicians and some companies;
  • It’s important we act to stop the damage that’s being done to protect our children and grandchildren’s futures;
  • Every part of the Earth’s climate system has continued warming over the past 15 years and 2017 is set to be one of top three hottest years on record.

Common misstatements:

“Climate change is a hoax…It is not caused by humans…Global warming actually stopped 15 years ago.” Read our suggested response.

"We need to build more coal power plants and keep existing plants open…coal is cheaper than renewable energy and better for jobs." Read our suggested response.

“Renewable energy is too unreliable and will cause blackouts….what happens when it’s not sunny and there’s no wind.” Read our suggested response.
