Misstatement: “We should all be celebrating Australia Day on 26 January.”

Some points:

It comes back to putting ourselves in the shoes of others. Imagine if we had been dispossessed of land we had lived on for 80,000 years, told it had never been ours and then had people celebrate that date as a national holiday.

No one is suggesting we lose a public holiday on 26 January. It’s important to remember what happened on that day, and it means different things to different people.

But it is possible to find a better day to celebrate being Australian.
