A Project of the Catholic Social Justice Welfare and Educational Agencies

Introduction - How to Use the Kit

At this time in Australia we are at a critical point in our political history. Democratic processes are being challenged. Policies like economic rationalism are being seriously questioned. The rights and responsibilities of individuals and communities are not sufficiently recognised. The negative effects of economic globalisation are undermining human rights.

A JUST VOTE - NOT JUST A VOTE is a kit containing a number of Issues Papers. It has been compiled through the network NetAct as a lead up to the coming Federal election. NetAct is short for Network for Action and brings together representatives from welfare agencies, religious orders, educational institutions, social justice groups and individuals. It is hoped that the kit will be distributed widely and used by many in the community to alert politicians to the concerns of Australian citizens, who believe in a 'fair go' for all.

The Kit

Reaffirms the right of church groups to speak on justice issues.

  • Highlights some key principles that underpin this right.
  • Looks ahead to the forthcoming Federal election.
  • Considers the impact on current issues of Church Social Teaching.
  • Suggests strategies for action.

Each paper includes, therefore, underpinning principles, relevant issues, and suggested alternative policies and action. Explanatory material includes relevant Catholic Social Teaching and practical information for contacting Members of Parliament.

How to use this Kit

  1. Select issues of concern to you from the Issues Papers.
  2. Make an appointment to visit the Candidate/Federal Member in your electorate to discuss that issue, using the paper as a guide for debate. (The guidelines on How to Visit a Politician on the accompanying page may be useful.)
  3. Leave a copy of the brief with your candidate/Member of Parliament.
  4. Use these papers as a basis for talk-back radio and letter writing.
  5. Feel free to copy appropriate papers as necessary as none of the material contained in this kit is protected by copyright
